Maintaining Balance

I recommend using an equilateral triangle as an analogy for balance. In order to be a successful medical student, one must allocate appropriate time to oneself, his or her family, and studying. Self-care and paying attention to the needs of one’s own family are important in order to have appropriate wellbeing.

Prioritizing

When in medical school, treat your studying as a full-time job. Effective learning, retention, and answering questions are vital elements of study time. If one is spending three hours on learning new information, one should also spend three hours of study time retaining that information, and another three hours answering questions related to the topic. When studying, don’t take shortcuts. Make sure you learn the information fully so you succeed and make a difference across the world.

Pushing Through

During your medical school years, you may experience stress and anxiety from an overload of medical information, social factors, financial struggles and even loss of loved ones. I have faced these inflammatory challenges myself that induced mental instability. Moreover, I would ask you not to give up in the face of hardships and pain. Instead, always push through and let nothing get in the way of completing your medical education. Know that in the end, these struggles are helping you develop admirable character and strength. They are part of your journey toward becoming an outstanding, well-rounded health care professional.
